Lectures on four-dimensional Dehn twists

چکیده
Let M be a closed symplectic manifold, with symplectic form ω. A symplectic automorphism is a diffeomorphism φ : M → M such that φω = ω. We equip the group Aut(M) = Aut(M,ω) of all such maps with the C-topology. Like the whole diffeomorphism group, this is an infinite-dimensional Lie group in a very loose sense: it has a well-defined Lie algebra, which consists of closed oneforms on M , but the exponential map is not locally onto. We will be looking at the homotopy type of Aut(M), and in particular the symplectic mapping class group π0(Aut(M)).

Parity Criterion and Dehn Twists for Unstabilized Heegaard Splittings
We give a parity condition of a Heegaard diagram to show that it is unstabilized. This improves the result of [5]. As an application , we construct unstabilized Heegaard splittings by Dehn twists on any given Heegaard splitting.
متن کاملSubgroups of Mapping Class Groups Generated by Three Dehn Twists
It has been shown that the mapping class group of a genus g ≥ 2 closed surface can be generated by 2g + 1 Dehn twists. Little is known, however, about the structure of those mapping class groups. This paper is an attempt to explain the structure of subgroups of the mapping class group of a closed surface of genus g ≥ 2 which are generated by three Dehn twists. 1 Background and Notation This pap...
متن کامل5-dimensional Contact So(3)-manifolds and Dehn Twists
In this paper the 5-dimensional contact SO(3)-manifolds are classified up to equivariant contactomorphisms. The construction of such manifolds with singular orbits requires the use of generalized Dehn twists. We show as an application that all simply connected 5-manifolds with singular orbits are realized by a Brieskorn manifold with exponents (k, 2, 2, 2). A 5-dimensional contact SO(3)-manifol...
متن کاملProducts of Pairs of Dehn Twists and Maximal Real Lefschetz Fibrations
We address the problem of existence and uniqueness of a factorization of a given element of the modular group into a product of two Dehn twists. As a geometric application, we conclude that any maximal real elliptic Lefschetz fibration is algebraic.
متن کاملSimplifying triangulations
We give a new algorithm to simplify a given triangulation with respect to a given curve. The simplification uses flips together with powers of Dehn twists in order to complete in polynomial time in the bit-size of the curve. keywords. triangulations of surfaces, flip graphs, Dehn twists Mathematics Subject Classification (2010): 57M20
